Suzuki SV650 Race Engine This Suzuki project is the third project being worked on here at Metric. Unlike the Joe Dirt, which is an all out stroked motor with big pistons and big everything. And unlike the Triumph Speed Triple which is a street upgrade that has to be user friendly for the street. The Metric Motocycles SV is right in between. The crank is stock. Now most won't believe it, but its true. This motor has to run a minimum of 110 octane fuel. And unfortunately requires a 24 volt start. This is a problem because it adds unnecessary weight. Below is a picture of a cylinder head completed and ready to go. The intake valves are oversize and combustion chamber volume has been decreased significantly to achieve our desired Compression ratio. The following picture is one of the methods I use to verify clearances. As you can see, a 1mm piece of solder is laid across the valve pockets and on to the squish area. The engine must be fully assembled, Cams degreed and every thing torqued. Then the engine is rotated 360 degrees and the disassembled and measured. Here is of one of the pistons being prepared for machining to allow clearance for the modified valves. We will perform the work on our new, specifically designed, machining equipment.
Using the Metric Motorcyles' equipment, specially setup for this purpose, the piston being machined to add clearance.
This labor-intensive, iterative process is repeated many times on each cylinder. First, to double check any mods made. Second, which is very important on a V-twin or flat-twin, to make sure the machining on both cylinder heads and pistons is equal. Taa Daa! The final product, ready for assembly. And for the pièce de résistance, the dyno run. BLUE TRACE. RED TRACE. |
